Pedro Melendez is a Borinquen born artist that now resides in Manhattan, Kansas after serving in the US Army for seventeen years. As a child he found his love for art within the pages of comic books and taught himself to draw by tracing then copying the characters on the pages. While attending East Side High School in Newark, New Jersey, where he grew up, he discovered graffiti and a world of urban art that he was closed off from. There the spray can became his medium and the streets of New York and New Jersey his canvas.
After his time in the military, he took advantage of the GI Bill and got his BFA in Studio Art with a concentration in Ceramics at Kansas State University in the Fall 2020. After a break to open his online pottery business, The Witch and The Geek, with his partner Nicole Peters, and to manage the ceramics studio as well as teach ceramics to adults and children at the Manhattan Art Center in Manhattan, Kansas, he returned to school to complete a second concentration in drawing.
Pedro’s first gallery exhibition in the Fall of 2020 at The Mark A. Chapman Gallery at Kansas State University he celebrated his art beginnings with a show of graffiti and sculptures, depicting tools of the trade. Plaster and cardboard were used to make his pieces, with flowing forms bringing his graffiti work into the room with motion and color. In the Spring of 2022, Pedro introduced a narrative related to mental health mental health. With a combination of graphite drawings and acrylic paint, he gives the message of the details that are often overlooked by others: suicide, medication, and often defeat.
